June Update from Welsh Water on flooding and sewage issues

 Hello Carole

 Further to my email of 16th March 21 I’m writing to update you on our progress in reducing the flood risk at Llanmaes.

 We’ve repaired some minor defects and removed a restriction on the sewer in the field downstream of the flood location. There are further works to line the sewer here which we weren’t able to complete at the same time due to high flows. Now the weather is dry the flows have reduced and we’ll be returning shortly to do this.

 The next phase of works will take place on the section of sewer that runs to the rear of the properties on Tyle House Close. Again, works will consist of sewer lining to mitigate ground water infiltration issues. Our CCTV contractors are currently in the process of completing final sections of survey work here, which we will then review and release any necessary work in the next few weeks.

 This will complete our initial investigations and minor works, and the next step is for our Alliance Partners to review the root cause and progress with a larger capital scheme to resolve the flooding. A meeting to discuss options is scheduled for next month, with a view to putting forward a scheme for delivery later in the current investment cycle (AMP 2020-2025).

Vacancy for Community Council Clerk

Llanmaes Community Council are looking to appoint a Clerk and Responsible Finance Officer to enable the council to meet its statutory obligations and responsibilities.

The Clerk/RFO reports to the community council as a corporate body and will help the councillors implement and develop council policy.  The community council has seven members and a paid clerk and meets every third Wednesday in the month.  The responsibilities of the council include a village green, a memorial garden, a small triangle of land at the northern entrance of the village, and a children’s play park.  Annual Precept for 2021/2022 is £12,500.

 The position is home based so the successful candidate will need to be self-motivated, disciplined, have the ability to work without direct supervision and to complete work to deadlines.

 The successful candidate will have good organisational, leadership and administrative abilities and must have excellent verbal and written skills in order to work well with councillors, colleagues and local residents.  The successful candidate will either be CiLCA qualified or prepared to work towards this qualification.

 Hours of Work: 7 hours per week, plus attendance at one pre-meeting and one council meeting per month.

 Remuneration:  Scale LC2 SCP Range 18-23

Preferable payment method will be contactless card. We will operate a queuing system with seating waiting area at West Winds.

There will be a variety of bedding plants, shrubs, annuals, perennials, vegetables and hanging baskets at competitive prices, plus this year we plan to have a used garden tools table, coffee, tea, cake and raffle prizes!

Llanmaes Lockdown Memories

Would you like to contribute your thoughts, memories and expertise to a Lockdown Memory Exhibition we will be holding in the village in late 2021?

One group is making a quilt. If you would like to sew a square, please contact Jackie or Gail on 792543 or gailtalks@hotmail.com to join the group and get regular updates. Another suggestion is a wall of words which, to you, sum up the lockdown experience. Could be loneliness, or toilet rolls, or masks …. Just write it down, in your own handwriting or in a word document, and we will collate. Children might like to draw us a picture of what it was like to be home schooled, or not to see friends in person. Photographers will have many shots recording this extraordinary year. However you wish to remember, or even forget 2020, please get your contributions to us by May 1 st , 2021.

Don’t forget the village art auction, with all proceeds going to the NHS, is still running. You can bid for a bargain at http://www.jumblebee.co.uk/nhsfundraiserauction until March 23rd, the first anniversary of lockdown. Our total contribution to the NHS and charities from mask sales and donations currently stands at £12000. Bids are at £1300. It wouldn’t take much to get to £15,000 which would be a fantastic achievement.

Dog Fouling

The Community Council has been made aware of the increasing amount of dog faeces that dog owners are leaving in the Memorial Field and to a lesser extent in the Small Children’s Play Area. This has been reported to the Vale Council and they will be arranging extra visits by their Enforcement Officer.

It is important that dog owners take responsibility for their dogs, particularly in areas where children play. No dogs are allowed in the Small Children’s Play Area and there are notices advising dog owners of this.

Toxocariasis is an infection caused by roundworm parasites most commonly found in cats and dogs. Humans can catch it from handling soil or sand contaminated with infected animal faeces. Young children are more commonly affected when they play and put their hands in their mouths.

Prowlers in Llanmaes

Over the past few weeks there have been a couple of incidents with prowlers in Llanmaes  It appears that nothing was stolen but some slight damage to property occurred.

 People are reluctant to contact the police as they are deemed to be very busy.  However our PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) has advised that we should call 999 if an incident is happening or believed to be in progress, and if an incident is obvious after the event, please call 101.

 They are not too busy and will respond as soon as they are able.

 If possible, please preserve the site for further investigation.

 If the Police are aware that these activities are happening they will increase vigilance in Llanmaes.

Do you know anyone in Llanmaes who is going to be lonely on Christmas day? Llanmaes ladies, who have raised £10,000 for the NHS and other charities by selling homemade face coverings, would like to give something back to anyone in need locally. A 2 course lunch, prepared by the Victoria Inn, Siginstone, ready to reheat, will be delivered on Christmas Eve.

Remembrance Sunday 2020

Sadly there will not be a service of Remembrance in St Cattwg’s church Llanmaes this Sunday but in line with other communities we have been asked to stand on our doors for the 2 minutes silence
We thought it Might be a nice idea if you would stand near one of the many poppies on the lampposts throughout the village instead

COVID-19 Information from the Vale of Glamorgan Council

Dear Colleagues,

As you may be aware that the number of Covid-19 cases in the Vale of Glamorgan has been increasing rapidly over the past week. The rate of new cases is now at 159.4 per 100,000 over the last 7 days, with the number of positive tests at 14.3%.

These figures are well over the Welsh Government’s red alert thresholds and the continued increase in the number of cases is a cause for real concern. In recent days, the Cardiff and Vale Test, Trace and Protect Service has been working to identify what additional steps could be taken to support Vale residents. 

It has been decided to establish a mobile testing unit within the Vale to make is as easy as possible for those residents that require a test to access one. The temporary facility, based in the Art Central gallery at King Square, will open to the public from today (Thursday 05 November). It will be in place for at least seven days. 

The Vale of Glamorgan Council along with the Cardiff and Vale UHB are seeking to publicise the new testing centre as widely as possible. Full details are available on the Council’s website and I ask that you share these with your networks wherever possible. 

The deployment of the mobile testing unit is one of a number of steps being taken to protect residents in the Vale from the pandemic. The Test, Trace, Protect (TTP) Service for Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan has been rapidly expanded in recent weeks. Within this partnership the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Shared Regulatory Services, Cardiff & Vale UHB, Public Health Wales and Cardiff Council all continue to work together very effectively.

The need for people to adhere to the current Firebreak lockdown rules and the new national restrictions that will come into effect on Monday 09 November is crucial. We are currently working closely with South Wales Police to ensure the current restrictions are being effectively enforced. 

From next week we will be working with Welsh Government and a range of other national and regional partners to ensure that all residents understand what the new rules mean for them, and how they can live with this virus. Again, I ask that all local partners use whatever communications tools they have available to support this work wherever possible. 

I will update you all on any further developments wherever appropriate. In the meantime, regular updates on changes to Council services are being given on the Council’s website and social media channels.
